Dog Lived (and So Will I)

Book Description

 October 1, 2012
The Dog Lived (and So Will I)
"Funny, smart, uplifting, and fun, The Dog Lived (and So Will I) reminds us that animals are among our best teachers, our most powerful healers, and our most steadfast friends. I loved it!"-Sy Montgomery, author of The Good Good Pig

The tale of a dog who wouldn't let go and the woman who followed his lead.

Teresa Rhyne vowed to get things right this time around: new boyfriend, new house, new dog, maybe even new job. But shortly after she adopted Seamus, a totally incorrigible beagle, vets told Teresa that he had a malignant tumor and less than a year to live. The diagnosis devastated her, but she decided to fight it, learning everything she could about the best treatment for Seamus. Teresa couldn't possibly have known then that she was preparing herself for life's next hurdle - a cancer diagnosis of her own.

She forged ahead with survival, battling a deadly disease, fighting for doctors she needed, and baring her heart for a seemingly star–crossed relationship. The Dog Lived (and so Will I) is an uplifting and heartwarming story about how dogs steal our hearts, show us how to live, and teach us how to love.

"This poignant and fast–moving memoir of Teresa and Seamus—both definitely Type A personalities— is proof that even a hard–charging lawyer is no match for a big–hearted beagle. Their mutual triumph over terrible trials is a testament to the healing power of dogs. Four paws up!" —Martin Kihn, author of Bad Dog (A Love Story)

"This encouraging tale of finding love and love in unexpected places is full of small yet valuable life lessons that any animal–lover would appreciate."—Publishers Weekly
"A book that dares to be honest and sad and hilarious all at once. It will help inspire many people to respond to the unexpected in their own lives with humor and grace."—Susan Conley, author of The Foremost Good Fortune

5.0 out of 5 stars Sometimes life has a different plan for you.... October 2, 2012
By Lori L. Lacefield
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
In this memoir, lawyer Teresa Rhyne, recently divorced, finds herself wanting to live a simpler life. One she calls her alphabet life: A for Alcohol (Wine), B for Books, C for Coffee, and D for Dogs.

Notice there is no M for Men, because she thinks a time-out would be a good thing in her life right now. But sometimes life has a different plan for you than the one you were busy planning. Enter Chris, 12 years younger, who, like Teresa, enjoys wine and books, but less so coffee or dogs. Enter incorrigible beagle named Seamus, who steals Teresa's heart with his incessent howl and big, brown eyes. Now place Teresa, Chris, and Seamus in the same room, add food, and see what hilarity unfolds. Add canine cancer, and see the determination of a beagle that will later guide Teresa through her own battle with breast cancer. Add family conflict, at times disapproving, and rejoice as acceptance and understanding is found. At times laugh-out-loud funny, at times emotional, and all the time heartwarming,

The Dog Lived (and so will I) is the happier side of Marley and Me. The title gives away the ending, but it won't stop you from wanting to journey along with Teresa, Chris, and Seamus as they navigate through the landscape of cancer and delicate relationships to form a new family of three. At the essence, it reminds us of how dogs frequently rescue us more than we rescue them. Highly recommended for memoir readers, dog lovers, and anyone who loves a story of overcoming adversity and succeeding.

This book is amazing! Anyone who had to deal with cancer, lost someone to cancer, or is fighting cancer should read this book. You also should read this book if you are a dog lover! So glad this author is completely candid. She does not hold back and for that I am grateful because she is going to help others laugh, cry and give some who feel like they have no hope that extra nudge to keep on keeping on. Teresa Rhyne ROCKS!! Oh, and of course the beagle in the book, Seamus, ya he is FAMOUS!

And the Mountains Echoed

Books Review Online would like to introduce a new book from Khaled Hosseini.

An unforgettable novel about finding a lost piece of yourself in someone else.

Khaled Hosseini, the #1 New York Times–bestselling author of The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, has written a new novel about how we love, how we take care of one another, and how the choices we make resonate through generations.

In this tale revolving around not just parents and children but brothers and sisters, cousins and caretakers, Hosseini explores the many ways in which families nurture, wound, betray, honor, and sacrifice for one another; and how often we are surprised by the actions of those closest to us, at the times that matter most.

Following its characters and the ramifications of their lives and choices and loves around the globe—from Kabul to Paris to San Francisco to the Greek island of Tinos—the story expands gradually outward, becoming more emotionally complex and powerful with each turning page.

About the Author

Khaled Hosseini was born in Kabul, Afghanistan, and moved to the United States in 1980. His first novel, The Kite Runner, was an international bestseller, published in thirty-eight countries. In 2006 he was named a goodwill envoy to UNHCR, the United Nations Refugee Agency. He lives in northern California.

Editorial Reviews

An Amazon Best Book of the Month, May 2013: Khaled Hosseini’s And the Mountains Echoed begins simply enough, with a father recounting a folktale to his two young children. The tale is about a young boy who is taken by a div (a sort of ogre), and how that fate might not be as terrible as it first seems—a brilliant device that firmly sets the tone for the rest of this sweeping, heartbreaking, and ultimately uplifting novel.

A day after he tells the tale of the div, the father gives away his own daughter to a wealthy man in Kabul. What follows is a series of stories within the story, told through multiple viewpoints, spanning more than half a century, and shifting across continents. The novel moves through war, separation, birth, death, deceit, and love, illustrating again and again how people’s actions, even the seemingly selfless ones, are shrouded in ambiguity. This is a masterwork by a master storyteller. —Chris Schluep

Review

And the Mountains Echoed opens like a thunderclap. . . . [Hosseini] asks good, hard questions about the limits of love. . . . Love, Hosseini seems to say, is the great leveler, cutting through language, class, and identity.  No one in this gripping novel is immune to its impact.”—O, the Oprah Magazine.

“The beautiful writing, full of universal truths of loss and identity, makes each section a jewel . . . Hosseini’s eye for detail and emotional geography makes this a haunting read.”—Publishers Weekly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Ideas, healthy diet February 5, 2013
By Stephen Ashley

From my wife Sarah: This diet makes sense to me on many levels. The author used to be a veterinarian who worked with fattening up cattle, and making horses strong, slender and fast. She took those principles she learned for the animals, and applied them to helping humans slim down in a way that's healthy, retains muscle and speeds metabolism. She found it worked. Now she's a consultant to the rich and famous.

Some of the principles in this book were ones I had discovered through reading a variety of books and doing a great deal of research. I created my own diet, and I lost 40 pounds. But with another 30 pounds to go, my weight loss stalled. No matter what I tried, I couldn't lose any more on my diet.

After reading this book I realized there were a few things I was doing that could have been slowing my metabolism. I'm planning to use several of the principles in this book to hopefully speed it up.

I can't say this diet is easy, but I can say that it looks healthy and balanced. And getting and staying healthy is at the core of it, which I heartily approve of. In fact it's similar to the diet I'm on for chronic illness, and it does make a difference.

The author removes anything from the diet that can inhibit weight loss, so if you stick to her program you won't be eating wheat, dairy, soy, sugar, corn, caffeine, fruit juice or artificial sweeteners. You can use a couple natural sweeteners like stevia (not my favorite, but tolerable).

The author talks about removing gluten because it can negatively impact weight loss, but then only removes wheat while allowing the other gluten containing grains. If you're gluten intolerant, eating gluten in any form could stall your weight loss, and many people have this problem without knowing it. If you still have difficulty losing weight even on this diet, you may wish to remove all forms of gluten.

The diet will take some preparation and planning, but it could be worth it. It will be easier for those who cook, but I think it could be done by those who don't.

For those not already eating like this, it could be very challenging to organize, plan and stick to. I think eating out could be a big challenge, but not impossible. The good news is that this diet can be temporary and done in 28 day increments. You can lose your weight in a healthy way and go off it. Still you might find that you feel better eating this way and stick to it!

By the way, soda is off the table, but I did inquire with the author and there's a soda called Zevia which is sweetened with stevia that she said would be fine for phase 1 and Phase 3 of her diet. Also, the author has a facebook page under her name, and she's answered our questions there. If you have questions you may get them answered there.

So if you're looking for a way to lose weight that's healthy, balanced and supports the body's systems without damaging muscle, I would recommend this book.
